How to publish your book as a busy attorney

You can publish your book as a busy attorney by spending about one hour a week in guided interviews while a team writes, publishes and promotes it.

That is the Big Impact Books process. It runs in four stages: plan, create, publish and promote. The weekly interview is designed to respect your time and honor your authentic voice, and the team turns your conversations into a high-impact book that attracts clients and media attention.

What are the steps to publish my book with Big Impact Books?

There are four steps, and you stay involved in each one without carrying the workload alone.

  1. Step 1: Plan the book

Clarify your audience, your goal and your topic. Write for where your practice is going next, not only where it is today.
  2. Step 2: Create through guided interviews

Each week, talk through a section of the book. The Big Impact Books team pieces the conversations together into chapters.
  3. Step 3: Publish

Review drafts, then the book moves through editing, design and production with Big Impact Books as publisher.
  4. Step 4: Promote

Podcast placements and media coverage introduce the book. Ongoing content keeps it working after launch.

The process in two cards

Definition

What is a guided interview?

A guided interview is a structured conversation in which an interviewer from Big Impact Books asks the questions that draw out your expertise, your stories and your point of view, one section of the book at a time.

It works well for attorneys because explaining things out loud is already part of the job. The interviews replace the blank page: instead of drafting chapters at night, you talk for about an hour, and the team does the shaping. You then review the drafts so every chapter is accurate and sounds like you.

What attorneys say about the weekly interviews

"The weekly interviews made the process manageable. Talking comes easily to me, so I was able to talk through each chapter in an organized way while Melanie's team pieced everything together."

Manisha P. Patel, attorney and author of End Your Marriage Peacefully

Before you start, think about client confidentiality. Stories usually need consent, anonymizing or composite examples, and your jurisdiction's professional conduct rules apply. Raise these in your interviews so the team can help you tell useful stories safely.

Will the book sound like me?

That is the point of an interview-based process. Because the manuscript is built from your own spoken answers, the language, examples, and opinions start with you. Big Impact Books says it honors each author's authentic voice and refuses to churn out cookie-cutter content, and you review drafts before anything is published.

How long does it take to write and publish a book?

Timelines depend on the book's length, how quickly you complete interviews and reviews, and the publishing and launch plan. Big Impact Books does not post a fixed timeline on its website, so ask for an estimated schedule in your first conversation. Starting marketing early, even before the book is finished, helps the launch either way.

Who owns the book and the ideas?

Your ideas and expertise are yours, and Big Impact Books says its clients get to own their brilliance. Ownership of the finished book, rights, and royalties should be spelled out in your publishing agreement. Read that agreement carefully, or have a publishing attorney review it, before you sign with any publisher or service.
